Access to the right aircraft can be more valuable than owning one aircraft.
For many principals and families, the strategic question is no longer whether private aviation is useful. It is which access model delivers the right combination of flexibility, capital efficiency, continuity and control.
Ownership provides control, but it also concentrates capital and operating responsibility.
Whole aircraft ownership can make sense for some very high-utilisation or highly specialised travel profiles. It also brings acquisition cost, depreciation exposure, crew, maintenance, insurance, hangarage, management and the practical risk that one aircraft may be unavailable or unsuitable for a particular mission.
Charter changes the model from owning the asset to buying access when it is required.
Charter avoids committing substantial capital to a depreciating aviation asset. The family office pays for individual journeys or an agreed access programme rather than funding ownership infrastructure.
Maintenance, crew employment, hangarage, insurance and aircraft management remain with the operator or owner rather than becoming direct family-office responsibilities.
A short regional sector, a family ski trip and a long-range intercontinental journey do not necessarily require the same aircraft. Charter allows the aircraft category to change with the mission.
If one aircraft becomes technically unavailable or unsuitable, access to the wider charter market may create alternative aircraft or routing options. Replacement availability is never guaranteed, but the client is not dependent on a single owned tail number.
Instead of managing an aviation asset, the family office receives trip-specific charter documentation and invoices under the agreed contractual structure.
The family office can focus on the travel requirement while the operator remains responsible for aircraft operations, maintenance, crew and regulatory compliance.
There is no universal answer.
Ownership can be appropriate when utilisation is consistently high, the same aircraft profile fits most missions, immediate control over a dedicated asset is strategically important, or the family has specialist security, configuration or operational requirements.
The decision should be based on actual annual utilisation, mission profile, capital preferences, governance and the value the family places on direct asset control.
On-demand charter
Maximum flexibility. Each journey is sourced individually, allowing aircraft category, operator and airport strategy to change with the mission.
Block hours
Useful where travel becomes more regular and the client values continuity, simpler administration or a more predictable service framework.
Ownership / fractional structures
Potentially appropriate for higher or more predictable utilisation, but with greater capital commitment, contractual complexity or asset exposure depending on the structure.
Start with the travel pattern, not the product.
SESJETS can review expected routes, frequency, passenger profile, aircraft preferences and peak-period requirements and help clients consider whether on-demand charter or a block-hour solution better fits the flying we arrange.
Where ownership, fractional ownership, tax structuring or aircraft acquisition is being considered, independent aviation, legal, tax and financial advice should also form part of the decision.
